SIMITU

The SIMITU Association aims at protecting patients with chronic skin ulcers. It is for this reason that it was set up by the patients and their family members and all those wishing to improve patients’ social conditions and welfare.
In particular, as envisaged in its by-laws, the Association ultimate purpose is to obtain social support by operating across the EU territory.
Simitu: operators, patients and citizens all together
In Italy, two million people suffer from chronic skin ulcers. Most decubitus ulcers (bedsores) affect about l'8% of hospitalised patients and 15% - 25% of patients admitted to long-term care facilities.
Prevalence of lower limb ulcers (for all possible causes) accounts for 1% in the general population with a peak of 3.6% in the population aged over 65.
15% of diabetic patients have a foot ulcer  and the number of ulcers is bound to go up in view of an increase in diabetic patients in the next decade.
ISTAT estimates that the population of over 80 in Italy (the one who is in greater healthcare need) will rise from 2.9 to 7.7 million in 2030 (ISTAT, 2011).  Therefore, the aim of SIMITU is to protect the right of treatment for patients with chronic skin ulcers.
